European Criminal law has developed steadily over the last decades, contributing to the ongoing development of a European criminal justice system. The Union has set itself the goal to offer its citizens an Area of Freedom Security and Justice in which a high level of security through measures to prevent and combat crime is ensured and fundamental rights are respected. This workshop sets out to explore the ongoing quest to create an effective European criminal justice system, which balances the different dimensions of the Area of Freedom, Security and Justice through adhering to, and strengthening the rule of law and protecting fundamental rights of individuals. To do so, the framework of mutual trust and mutual recognition, which has been the motor of European integration in criminal matters for the past 15 years, as well as the Unions approach to tackling so-called Euro crimes, i.e. serious forms of crimes with a cross border dimension (such as terrorism and corruption) will be discussed.
