The main topic of the Agriculture and Fisheries Council's meeting will be EU member states’ strategic plans and negotiations on fishing opportunities

On the first day of the two-day meeting in Luxembourg held on 11 -12 October, EU agriculture and fisheries ministers will focus on the preparation of the CAP Strategic Plans. The deadline for member states to send these plans to Brussels is approaching.

Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Food Dr Jože Podgoršek

To this end, the exchange of information between ministers on the progress in the preparation of plans, difficulties faced by countries in the preparation, and transparency and coordination with stakeholders will all play an important role. On the first day of the meeting, agricultural ministers will also hold a discussion on the review of EU marketing standards for agricultural products. The Honey Directive, which requires that the country in which the honey was produced be indicated on the label, especially in the case of mixtures of honey, will also be at the forefront of discussions.

Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Food Dr Jože Podgoršek said, “This meeting of the Council in Luxembourg will be complex both technically and in terms of content, but I look forward to the demanding and varied discussions with my fellow ministers, as I know that we can be constructive even on difficult topics and take decisions for the benefit of farmers, rural areas, fishermen and for the welfare of animals.” The first day of the meeting will also be challenging in the field of fisheries, as discussions on fishing opportunities in the Baltic Sea and an exchange of views on fishing opportunities with the United Kingdom and annual consultations between the EU and Norway are planned. In parallel to the Council meeting, complex negotiations on fishing opportunities will take place.

On the second day of the Council's meeting, ministers will discuss the new EU Forest Strategy and consider the “Fit for 55” legislative package from the perspective of the contribution of agriculture and forestry. The quality policy reform initiative and the animal welfare legislation initiative will also be on the agenda.

More information on the agenda and outcomes of the meeting is available on the website of the Council of the European Union.
