THIS LECTURE IS CANCELED AND WILL BE ADJOURNED TO NEXT YEAR.

Every other year the Four Freedom Awards, are awarded by the Roosevelt Foundation. In 1941 President Franklin Roosevelt painted a picture of a world in which four freedoms would be secured for all:

  • freedom of speech,
  • freedom of worship,
  • freedom from fear,
  • freedom from want.

The laureates of 2020 tour the Netherlands. Azza Karam, as representative of Religions for Peace, is one of them. This organisation will receive the Freedom of Worship Award. Since the founding in 1970 it has been guided by the vision of a world in which religious communities cooperate effectively for peace, while respecting religious differences. Through Religions for Peace, diverse religious communities from all over the world discern “deeply held and widely shared” moral concerns, such as transforming violent conflict, promoting just and harmonious societies, advancing human development and protecting the earth.

Azza Karam, joined by Natascha van Weezel, will discuss the dynamics between religions, the common goals, and the obstacles.

This lecture is hosted in partnership with The Faces of Margraten. Margraten, close to Maastricht, is the final resting place of more than 8,000 U.S. soldiers who died in World War II.

On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II a series of lectures is organised by The Faces of Margraten and its partners to inspire today's young generation, showing how we can take a stance on present-day challenges to freedom and to help expand freedom to others.
