Due to recent events and developments, SIB decided to postpone this lecture. The new date: 27th of May. Every month SIB touches upon another, often hot, topic with interesting speakers. They have been able to welcome ministers and professors, politicians and scientists and many more. These lectures are often visited by both members and non-members as they are accessible to all.

This time SIB is organising a lecture around the topic of Brexit as the United Kingdom is scheduled to leave the European Union by the end of March. What started as an issue within the British Conservative Party under David Cameron has turned into a crisis of international scope. The uncertain diplomatic situation regarding Northern Ireland and the backstop showcases the complex nature of the Brexit negotiations. With the rising likelihood of a No-Deal Brexit, PM Theresa May finds herself in a troublesome position between Brexit hardliners and Remainers domestically, while facing a tough diplomatic strategy by the chief negotiator of the EU Michel Barnier.

During this lecture, we are going to look into the past years of Brexit negotiations and its potential consequences for the UK and the EU. First, we will examine the respective strategies, goals and achievements as put forward by the EU-27 and the UK government. Then, we will seek to answer the question for why the negotiations have led to a situation of such unclarity regarding the consequences of Brexit. How will Brexit affect British and EU citizens? What are the steps forward? Will the negotiations culminate in economic mayhem or diplomatic agreement?

After the lecture there is an Q&A session with the speakers. The speakers will be announced in the Facebook event later.

Access is free if you have a valid student card. If you’re not a student anymore, you can visit the lecture for only 5 euros! You can pick up your ticket at the CREA desk.

Afterwards we’ll have drinks together, so we invite you to join us in the CREA café!
