The Amsterdam Centre for European Studies Practitioner Engagement Series

Evenement

Since the 1993 Oslo Accords, the EU, more than any other international actor, has invested in the Palestinian state-building. The rationale was that the building and well-functioning of Palestinian institutions would lead to the establishment of a Palestinian state living alongside Israel in peace and security.

25 years later it is clear that the Oslo paradigm has exhausted itself and it has brought neither peace nor an end to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict or a Palestinian state. Recently, US President Trump decided to move the US Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, close the Palestinian Liberation Organisation's (PLO) office in Washington and cut US funding to the United Nations relief and works agency for Palestine refugees in the near east (UNRWA) while the ‘deal of the century’ is being prepared by the US Administration. At the same time, Palestinians remain divided and the situation on the ground is getting worse while in Israel a shift towards right-wing policies is observed especially with the adoption of the “nation-state law”. The EU has tried to resist US policies and keep the two-state solution alive. The aim of this event will be to take stock of past and present EU initiatives on the ground as well as Palestinian and Israeli perceptions of them and also of the EU.

This seminar is organised by Dimitris Bouris.
