On 1 st and 2 nd June, the European Committee of the Regions will be hosting the 4 rd Assises of the Decentralised Cooperation co-organised with the European Commission expected to gather around 700 persons.
The Assises of Decentralised Cooperation for development is a unique opportunity to bring together local and regional authorities' representatives from the EU and developing countries.
This edition takes place in the context of the 2015 European Year of Development, the first ever European Year to showcase Europe's commitment to eradicating poverty worldwide and to inspire more Europeans to get engaged and involved in development. 2015 is also the year in which the Millennium Development Goals the international community will agree on the future global framework for poverty eradication and sustainable development.
This event intends to strengthen development aid effectiveness integrating local and regional authorities into the development cooperation policies and to promote a genuine EU partnership between the different actors active in this field.
On the 1st and 2nd June Seminars will be hold on education, fair trade, territories and governance, capacity building, mobility and migration and biodiversity. Five parallel thematic roundtables will be hold on the 1st June, in the afternoon, on the territorial approach, climate change, urban policies and regional and local authorities.
The main recommendations of the Assises are expected to shape the next steps of the European development policy, particularly in its territorial dimension. Local and Regional Authorities have a key role in mobilising different stakeholders to work together, thus generating collaborative approaches to attaining common development goals.
The Plenary Session of the Assises, on the 2nd of June, will be chaired by the European Committee of the Regions President, Markku Markkula, to exchange views on development cooperation and hold a political dialogue with the European institutions, notably representatives of the European Commission, the European Parliament and the Presidency of the European Council.
