The President of the European Parliament Martin Schulz and Pascal Lamy, President of the Sponsorship Committee of the European Book Prize will be hosting the 2013 edition of the European Book Prize, starting tomorrow, 4 December 2013, at 18:00 in the European Parliament, József Antall Building, 2nd floor, Room Q2.
The European Book Prize seeks to promote European values and to contribute to European citizens' better understanding of the European Union as a cultural entity. The prize is awarded to a novel and an essay that best convey a vision of the Europe of tomorrow.
The Jury is composed of European journalists and is presided this year by Bernard-Henri Lévy. Previous presidents of the Jury were Costa-Gavras, Julian Barnes, Volker Schlöndorff, Ezio Mauro, Jorge Semprun and Henning Mankell.
The 2013 finalists in the novel category are Edouardo Mendoza with An Englishman in Madrid (Riña de Gatos - Madrid 1936), Luciana Castellina with La découverte du monde (La Scoperta del Mondo), Vassilis Alexakis with L'enfant grec andPetros Markaris with Liquidations à la grecque (Ρευστοποιήσεις στην ελληνική).
The 2013 finalists in the essay category are Ulrich Beck with Non à l'Europe allemande (Das Deutsche Europa), Michel Aglietta and Thomas Brand with Un new deal pour l'Europe?, Yves Charles Zarka with Refaire l’Europe avec Jürgen Habermas and Arnaud Leparmentier pour Ces Français, fossoyeurs de l’euro.
During the ceremony a tribute will also be paid to Jean Daniel, founder of Le Nouvel Observateur, Eugenio Scalfari, founder of La Repubblica and Adam Michnik, founder of Gazeta Wyborcza.
