The Schengen area of free movement is a unique achievement. Each year millions of European citizens freely cross our internal borders without a border control.
Today the European Parliament voted on a reform of the Schengen governance.
In 2011, the Commission put forward two legislative proposals to further promote and reinforce the Schengen area of free movement: a proposal strengthening the Schengen evaluation and monitoring mechanism; and a proposal for the coordinated reintroduction of controls at internal borders in exceptional circumstances (amending the Schengen Border Code).
