11/06/2012 - On Friday, 8 June, the Croatian Mountain Rescue Service conducted a complex rescue operation in the caves of the Kita Gačešina on the south side of Velebit, where a man became trapped and injured.
A unit of the Slovenian Mountain Rescue Service was also put on stand-by ready to support the operation if needed. Fortunately Croatian Mountain Rescue Service managed to solve the situation with its own members. After a hard night in the cave the injured speleologist was rescued.
The coordination between the two countries' rescue teams was helped by the fact that they are both participants in the EU PROTEUS project. This project is an EU-funded disaster preparedness project, aimed at enhancing the awareness and preparedness of cavers in Slovenia and Croatia. In the frame of the EU Proteus project both rescue teams are working together and have been together trained several times to work in such actions.
