The News

The EC will launch the communication campaign for the European Year of Creativity and

Innovation 2009 with the slogan "Imagine-Create-Innovate". The event also sees the

inauguration of the associated website: http://create2009.europa.eu (available on the 5th of

December). The EU is emphasizing creativity and innovation as a response to the social

and economic challenges facing Europe in an intensely competitive, globalising world

economy, by fostering the creative and innovative potential in all of us. Hundreds of

activities and projects which represent good practice in innovation and creativity will be

promoted during this Year.

Each year the EU chooses a theme for a campaign aimed at raising public and national

governments awareness on a specific issue. 2009 has been designated the Year of

Creativity and Innovation to raise awareness of importance of creativity and innovation as a

key competence in personal, social and economic development.

The EC has been directly involved with over 30 headline events, among them: the

European Year photo competition "Cultures on my street". More than 2,000 entries were

submitted; winning photos are now part of an exhibition touring across the EU. A series of

seven "Brussels Debates" has proven a popular forum for sharing ideas on intercultural

dialogue policy and practice. The Year has benefited also from the support of its "European

Ambassadors"; famous names such as Paolo Coelho, Jordi Savall and Abd Al Malik have

lent their support to intercultural dialogue in interviews and events. Seven international

flagship projects were selected and implemented. The European Year website

www.dialogue2008.eu has attracted over 500,000 visits.

Europese Commissie (EC)
