3 - 4 October 2022
Europe is at the turning point. The pandemic has caused significant economic hardships and exacerbated existing inequalities in our societies. The Russian military aggression against Ukraine has violated humanitarian and human rights law and shattered the peace in Europe. Once again, we have been reminded that Europe’s long-term prosperity and stability are based on functioning democratic mechanisms. The migrant and refugee crises present a challenge to the EU Member States who must protect their human rights and ensure their integration. The rising costs of energy, goods, and services make those vulnerable struggling to make ends meet. Climate change poses an existential threat to humanity. All these crises have a clear gender dimension.
The present challenges will shape the Europe of tomorrow. To build a lasting Union of Equality for future generations, we need to take action now. The task ahead of Europe is to take responsibility for its political architecture and ensure it is a place, where women and men, girls and boys, in all their diversity, have equal opportunities to thrive and participate in society. Today’s state of Europe should not be viewed as a state of the twilight of civilisation, as every crisis presents a new opportunity - the opportunity to rethink, rebuild, repower. We have the momentum to re-launch European economies and make them more just, sustainable, and gender-inclusive.
The promotion of equality between women and men is a task for the Union, in all its activities, as required by the Treaties. Gender equality is a core value of the EU, a fundamental right enshrined in the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the EU, and a key principle of the European Pillar of Social Rights. The purpose of the conference is to discuss how to best promote gender equality in the new realities with a specific focus on economic and social rights. Taking into account the European Year of Youth 2022, the conference will facilitate dialogue with the young generation and address challenges that young people face today in order to achieve the Union of Equality tomorrow.
The conference will be hosted in Prague bringing together representatives of the Commission, European Parliament, EU member states and candidate countries, EU agencies, non-governmental organisations, social partners, youth organisations, and a number of other key stakeholders.
