Comité van de regio's verwelkomt Europese Economische Ruimte 2013 (en)

Met dank overgenomen van Directoraat-generaal Ondernemingen en industrie (ENTR), gepubliceerd op donderdag 16 februari 2012.

"On behalf of the Committee of the Regions, I would like to congratulate the regions Nord-Pas de Calais, Southern Denmark and Styria for receiving the EER label for the year 2013. The EER jury was impressed by these regions' innovative entrepreneurial policy strategies, path-breaking political visions and their strong commitment to contribute to the network of entrepreneurial regions in order to boost regional competitiveness, create sustainable growth and jobs and promote entrepreneurial mindsets, especially among the young generation."

With these words, CoR President Mercedes Bresso will welcome representatives from the three winning regions of the 'European Entrepreneurial Region' (EER) label for the year 2013 to an award ceremony, organised within the margins of the Committee of the Regions' (CoR) plenary session tomorrow in Brussels.

Pierre de Saintignon (Nord-Pas-de-Calais), Vice President in charge of Economic Development, New Technologies and Professional Training; Lasse Krull (Southern Denmark), Chairman of the Committee for regional development; and Christian Buchmann (Styria), Provincial Minister of Economic Affairs, Europe and Culture will each be receiving on behalf of their region the award for the EER label for 2013. On this occasion, they will be given the opportunity to present their respective EER visions and objectives before the members of the CoR and the EER jury who had selected these regions at their meeting in December 2011.

The French region Nord-Pas-de-Calais distinguished itself with comprehensive regional innovation programmes setting clear targets, showing strong stakeholder cooperation, whilst also highlighting a clear commitment to the implementation of the "Small Business Act for Europe" (SBA) and demonstrating how the EER label would bring added-value to the regional policy. Southern Denmark's application presented a detailed analysis of entrepreneurship-related weaknesses and areas for improvement, as well as a good action plan around three major themes, and clearly identified areas of business excellence, as well as presenting a very concrete EER 2013 project: the entrepreneurial one-stop-shop. The Austrian Land of Styria presented a comprehensive general strategy in the framework of the Europe 2020 targets, with a strong social dimension, specific measures for migrants, a commitment for its specialisation strategy and a strong focus for Public Private Partnerships. Furthermore, Styria suggested concrete ideas on how to foster cooperation among the EER regions.

The EER initiative, originally introduced by the CoR in 2009, aims to encourage the promotion of all forms of entrepreneurship within Europe's regions and cities, implement the SBA in partnership and make optimal use of public and private funds oriented towards these objectives. The EER also intends to help local and regional actors create innovative, green and entrepreneurial regions throughout the EU, whilst ensuring both sustainable growth and a commitment to bolstering the region's economy as a whole.

Since its inception, the EER label has been awarded to six regions: Land Brandenburg (Germany)-, County Kerry (Ireland) and Murcia (Spain) for 2011; Catalonia (Spain), Helsinki-Uusimaa (Finland) and Trnava Self-Governing region (Slovak Republic) for 2012. Thus far, the three European Entrepreneurial Regions 2011 have each successfully promoted a more entrepreneurial Europe and have been encouraged to boost their respective potential.

Following the great interest and numerous applications, the EER will once again open its registration for the EER label 2014 near the end of the first half of the year.
