Introduction

Are you willing to take an active role in the smooth running of more than 9,000 Windows and Mac desktops? Take part and be involved in improving the client computing environment serving a very demanding community.

You will join:

• - 

  The Information Technology (IT) Department which provides computing services for all aspects of the laboratory’s activities. These require a wide range of technologies and skills including the provision of computing facilities, local and wide area networking, platforms for computing environments, software development, databases, desktop environments and a wide range of system integration and management tasks.   The Operating Systems and Infrastructure Services (OIS) group which provides support for 3 operating systems (Windows, Linux, MacOS) and a range of services for information exchange, personal and group communications, collaborative work, certification, authentication, all based on the Web and the Internet. Functions

As Desktop Services Manager in the ODS Section, you will assist and advise our users to get the most out of their 7,000 Windows and 2,000 Apple Mac clients. Your main activities will consist of:

• - 

  Coordination of major deployments such as new releases of operating systems, applications or infrastructure migrations.
• - 

  Investigation and resolution of the most challenging (third level) technical desktop or application issues, in collaboration with the other members of the group and software vendors if necessary.
• - 

  Advice and solution design for our users and LHC experiments staff in areas of desktop computing.
• - 

  Definition, documentation and implementation of procedures following the ITIL recommendations.
• - 

  Active participation in the choice or definition of the tools necessary to achieve these goals.
• - 

  Close collaboration with other IT groups and departments at CERN.

Qualification required

University degree or equivalent in the field of computing.

Experience and competencies

The experience required for this post is:

• - 

  Managing Windows and/or Mac client systems in a large scale production environment.
• - 

  Performing automation tasks using scripting languages such as PowerShell, Python or Perl.

The technical competencies required for this post are:

• - 

  Design & selection of methods and tools: analyse sub-optimum procedures, streamline and document new ones; optimisation of existing tools and selection of the most appropriate one for a given proces.
• - 

  Technical advice and guidance: handling of special user requests on top of standard offerings; development of technical expertise within the team.
• - 

  Change management: coordination of changes within and outside the group, such as deployment of new operating systems.

The behavioural competencies required for this post are:

The language competencies required for this post are:

  Spoken and written English: ability to draw-up technical specifications and scientific reports in English and to make oral presentations; basic knowledge of French or an undertaking to acquire it rapidly.

Note on Employment Conditions

We offer a limited-duration contract for a period of 5 years. Limited-duration contracts shall terminate by default on their date of expiry. Subject to certain conditions, holders of limited-duration contracts may be granted an indefinite contract.

These functions require participation in a regular stand-by duty, including nights, Sundays and public holidays.
