Job Description

The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is one of the highest ranked scientific research organisations in the world. The Headquarters Laboratory is located in Heidelberg (Germany) and the outstations are in Grenoble (France), Hamburg (Germany), Hinxton (UK) and Monterotondo (Italy).

We are looking for a Budget Officer who will be responsible for the financial administration of grants, including the monitoring and controlling of expenditure against budget and preparation of Cost Statements, and liaising with and assisting grant-holding scientists. The successful candidate will also contribute to the preparation of the laboratory's budget. In addition, the post holder will be involved in the update of the budget and financial planning of the Laboratory as well as taking an active part in the development of the SAP-based financial and management accounting system.

Qualifications and Experience

The ideal candidate should have appropriate qualifications and/or experience in accounting/ controlling as well as sound knowledge of budgetary control, basic accounting concepts and financial reporting principles. Experience in the administration of academic research grants will be considered an advantage. The post holder should be fluent in both English and German; additionally, knowledge of French would be beneficial. We are looking for a candidate with good communication and interpersonal skills as well as good working knowledge of the usual office software packages. Proficiency in accounting software (SAP is preferred) would be an advantage. Experience of working in a scientific institution or international organisation is desirable.
