Job Description
The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is one of the highest ranked scientific research organisations in the world. The Headquarters Laboratory is located in Heidelberg (Germany) and the outstations are in Grenoble (France), Hamburg (Germany), Hinxton (UK) and Monterotondo (Italy).
The successful candidate will report directly to the EMBL Head of Finance and manage a team of 5 staff. The post holder will be responsible for oversight and control of the financial management of EMBL’s scientific research projects, including financial planning, budget preparation and monitoring expenditure against budget. Key to the role will be successfully supporting various scientific and administrative staff in managing their projects and providing EMBL management with a clear and timely picture of EMBLs various financial activities, highlighting areas of opportunity and risk through the year.
A significant feature of the incumbent’s role and workload will be a proactive and forwarding thinking approach to administration of grant funded projects. The incumbent will need to provide effective risk management of compliance alongside supporting project managers with their financial administration of grants, preparation of financial reports and liaison with grant funding bodies.
The successful candidate will be responsible for managing the work of the other controlling staff as well as their motivation and development. The candidate will act as an agent for promoting co-operation with other areas of EMBL including those inside and outside of the finance department.
Qualifications and Experience
The ideal candidate should have appropriate financial qualifications and an advanced knowledge of project controlling, budgetary costing and management, preferably within public administration. The candidate will be able to demonstrate a successful career with 5 to 10 years professional experience, some of which should be at a management level. Knowledge of grants would be a distinct advantage. This experience will be within a relevant public body or the candidate should be able to provide evidence of equivalent experience outside public service. A good knowledge of English as well as German and/or French is essential. Professional experience in scientific institutions or international organisations is desirable, but not mandatory.
