Introduction

Are you a Technical Engineer (Applied Physics) who has the ability to design, test and analyse the new beam profile monitors foreseen for the upgrade of the CERN injector complex. Then Join the Beams Department, which hosts the Groups responsible for beam generation, acceleration, diagnostics, controls and performance optimisation, where you will work in the Beam Instrumentation Group and take part in developing and maintaining the instruments used by the accelerator operators to visualise the particle beams being produced and accelerated at CERN. Functions

As a Technical Engineer (Applied Physics) in the Beam Loss Measurement Section, your task will be to design, build, test, install and analyse the new profile monitoring systems foreseen for the CERN injector complex upgrade programme.

This will involve:

  • Participation in the design, prototyping and testing of new wire scanners and ionisation profile monitors.
  • Building the test benches for prototype testing and calibration.
  • Organising and executing system tests and the subsequent analysis of the measurement data.
  • Responsibility for the production, installation, commissioning and operation of these devices.
  • Documentation of these systems.

Qualification required

Technical engineer diploma or equivalent qualification.*

*Please note that preference will be given to candidates with the qualification level indicated above: candidates with higher qualifications than those required will normally not be considered for this vacancy.

Experience and competencies

The experience required for this post is:

  • Demonstrated experience in the field of applied physics.

The technical competencies required for this post are:

  • Detector design, construction, testing and operation.
  • Detector performance simulation and analysis.
  • Operation and maintenance of data acquisition systems.
  • Simulation and design of imaging optics.
  • Knowledge of accelerator physics theory.

The behavioural competencies required for this post are:

  • Achieving results: delivering high quality work on time and fulfilling expectations.
  • Working in teams: building and maintaining constructive and effective work relationships.
  • Managing self: working well autonomously; taking on activities and tasks without prompting.

The language competencies required for this post are:

  • Good knowledge of English or French, basic knowledge of the other language or an undertaking to acquire it rapidly.

Note on Employment Conditions

We offer a limited-duration contract for a period of five years. Limited-duration contracts shall terminate by default on their date of expiry. Subject to certain conditions, holders of limited-duration contracts may be granted an indefinite contract.

These functions may require: 

  • Work outside normal CERN working hours including nights, Sundays and public holidays.
  • Intervention in underground installations.
  • Work in a controlled radioactive environment.
