1. INLEIDING
De interne markt is een van de pijlers van de Europese Unie. Vrij verkeer van personen, goederen, diensten en kapitaal werden daardoor een tastbare werkelijkheid, die de Europeanen concrete voordelen oplevert. De interne markt heeft banen geschapen en stimuleerde de groei. Dankzij de interne markt konden Europeanen in een ander land leven, werken, studeren en genieten van hun oude dag. Zo konden anderhalf miljoen Erasmus-studenten profiteren van mobiliteit in de hele EU. De interne markt leverde de consumenten een ruimer aanbod op aan goederen en diensten tegen lagere prijzen en zorgde voor hogere kwaliteit en meer veiligheid. De bedrijven kregen een gemeenschappelijk stel regels én toegang tot een markt van 500 miljoen consumenten. De interne markt is van cruciaal belang gebleken voor een soepel functionerend Europees economisch en monetair beleid en vormde een stevige basis voor de invoering van de euro. De uitgebreide interne markt maakte Europa opener, diverser en concurrerender, creëerde nieuwe kansen, respecteerde sociale rechten en bevorderde hoge gezondheids-, veiligheids- en milieunormen.
