Samenvatting
De herziening van de eerste driejaarscyclus van de vernieuwde Lissabonstrategie voor groei en werkgelegenheid nadert met rasse schreden en in 2008 gaat de tweede cyclus van start. Dit lijkt dan ook een geschikt moment om te kijken naar de geboekte vooruitgang en te praten over toekomstige oriëntaties van een van de kernelementen van deze strategie: de Europese Onderzoeksruimte (EOR). Deze in hoog tempo veranderende wereld wordt gekenmerkt door een steeds sneller verlopend proces van globalisering van onderzoek en technologie, en door de opkomst van nieuwe wetenschappelijke en technologische grootmachten, met name China en India. In dat licht bezien is de EOR meer dan ooit een hoeksteen van een Europese kennismaatschappij. In een dergelijke maatschappij worden onderzoek, onderwijs, opleiding en innovatie optimaal benut om te voldoen aan de economische en maatschappelijke ambities en de milieuambities van de EU, maar ook aan de verwachtingen van de EU-burger.
