Algirdas Šemeta, Commissioner for Taxation, Customs Union and Anti-Fraud, will visit China from 1-6 September, to strengthen customs cooperation between the EU and China and the fight against fraud. During his visit, he will open an international customs conference at the Shanghai World Expo 2010 on Building Bridges to Facilitate Trade while Protecting Citizens. Around 140 participants will discuss the best ways to enhance customs cooperation, facilitate trade and protect both EU and Chinese citizens from counterfeit goods. The Commissioner and Chinese Minister Sheng Guangzu from the General Administration of Customs of China will address issues such as trade facilitation, protecting intellectual property rights and tackling counterfeit cigarettes. On 2 September, the Commissioner will visit the port of Shanghai and meet business representatives, customs officers and intellectual property right owners, who have a strong interest in seeing good EU-Chinese cooperation in the field of customs. On 3 September, he will open the 5th EU-China Joint Customs Cooperation Committee in Shanghai and make a speech at the National college of China Customs.

Deze instelling van de Europese Unie kan worden beschouwd als het 'dagelijks bestuur' van de EU. De leden van de Europese Commissie worden 'eurocommissarissen' genoemd. Elke eurocommissaris is verantwoordelijk voor één of meerdere beleidsgebieden. Momenteel zijn er 27 eurocommissarissen, voor elke lidstaat één. Samen vormen zij het college van eurocommissarissen. De eurocommissarissen moeten het belang van de Europese Unie als geheel behartigen, niet dat van hun eigen land.
De Europese Commissie mag als enige EU-instelling wetsvoorstellen indienen. Daarnaast controleert de Commissie of de Europese wetgeving juist wordt toegepast in de lidstaten. Bij overtredingen kan de Commissie een lidstaat dwingen zich aan Europese regelgeving te houden, door een procedure te starten bij het Europese Hof van Justitie.
