DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Under the supervision of the Senior Appeals Counsel in the Prosecution Division of the Office of the Prosecutor, the incumbent will perform the following duties:

i)Analyse court decisions and filings, and advise on prospects for seeking leave to appeal, presenting arguments on appeal, or advancing appropriate responses;
-
ii)Conduct legal research, as required (regarding international criminal law, comparative criminal law and procedure, evidence and policy issues) and prepare legal opinions for discussion;
-
iii)In the context of appellate proceedings, draft legal motions, submissions and briefs on behalf of the Prosecution and in response to defense submissions or any other submissions on matters litigated before the Appeals Chamber; in relation to applications for leave to appeal, draft applications, responses and any other submissions, as required;

iv)Provide legal advice and support to Trial Teams as requested;

v)Participate in the preparation and presentation of oral arguments;

vi)Participate in hearings as instructed by the Senior Appeals Counsel; and review, analyse and select evidence and materials for the purposes of appellate proceedings where required;

vii)Assist in the development and implementation of internal procedures for handling information within the Appeals Section;

viii)Perform any other tasks as requested by the Deputy Prosecutor or Senior Appeals Counsel.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
-
a)University degree in law from a recognized university, preferably specializing in criminal law, international law or human rights law;

b)At least 7 years’ working experience (5 years with an advanced degree) in litigation (including pre-trial preparation and litigation), preferably as a prosecutor, investigating magistrate, criminal defence lawyer, or the equivalent; relevant government experience may also be considered;

c)Good knowledge of international and comparative criminal law;

d)Excellent drafting and analytical skills;

e)Effective communication skills - both written and oral;
-
f)Ability to plan and organize tasks as well as work under time pressure and urgent deadlines;

g)Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with people of diverse cultural backgrounds;

h)Professional and personal integrity.
KNOWLEDGE OF LANGUAGES
Fluency in either of the working languages of the Court, English or French, is essential. A working knowledge of the other is desirable. Fluency in both languages would be considered a strong asset. Knowledge of another official language of the Court would be considered an asset. (Arabic, Chinese, Russian, Spanish)
