DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The English Reviser will work in the Court Interpretation and Translation Section within the Division of Court Services, in close cooperation with the Head of Translation and under the supervision of the Chief of the Section. He or she will work in a demanding and high-pressure but rewarding environment.

The successful candidate will be expected to:

(a) revise, edit and occasionally translate and proofread documents covering a wide range of topics including but not limited to legal, political, military, medical, forensic, human rights, administrative and financial matters from French into English;

(b) devise and implement procedures to ensure accuracy, clarity, cohesion and conformity with ICC standards, policy and practice;

(c) consult with authors, revisers, editors and translators and carry out research to clarify ambiguities and rectify errors;

(d) provide feedback to other revisers and editors as well as to translators with a view to developing their skills;

(e) submit regular reports to the Chief of Section on the progress of revisers, editors and translators;

(f) assist the Head of Translation with work and budget planning of the English Translation Unit;

(g) assist the Terminology and Reference Unit in the consideration of new terminology;

(h) devise and conduct translation, editing and revision workshops;

(i) recruit full-time staff and participate in the recruitment, testing and accreditation of freelance language staff;

(j) perform other tasks as required by the Chief of Section.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

The successful candidate will possess:

(a) an advanced university degree in translation, languages, law or other relevant subject matter;

(b) nine years of professional experience (seven years with an advanced university degree), of which at least five in translation in an international working environment;

(c) solid writing and editorial skills, sensitivity to nuance;

(d) a high degree of specialisation in topics dealt with by the Court, namely legal, political, military, medical, forensic, human rights, administrative and financial matters;

(e) proven training ability;

(f) familiarity with terminology databases and knowledge of relevant computer software including word-processing programmes;

(g) proven ability in leading a translation team working to deadlines;

(h) diplomatic and negotiating skills.

KNOWLEDGE OF LANGUAGES

Mother-tongue proficiency in English and a high level of proficiency in French. Knowledge of another language (preferably an official language of the Court or a language of a State Party) would be considered an asset.

Shortlisted candidates will be invited to take the ICC reviser test.

NB: The Court reserves the right not to make any appointment to this vacancy, to make an appointment at a lower grade, or to make an appointment with a modified job description.

The International Criminal Court is a member organization of the Inter-Organization Mobility Accord and is interested in secondment of staff from organizations of the United Nations Common System.
