6. Staatkundige ontwikkelingen

In presidential elections, incumbent Anote Tong wins about 65% of the vote and Nabuti Mwemwenikarawa about 33%. Turnout is about 50%. In the new cabinet sworn in on October 23, Natan Teewe becomes finance minister; Tong remains foreign minister and Amberoti Nikora internal affairs minister.

In the first round of parliamentary elections, 18 of the 44 seats are allocated, President Anote Tong being among the successful candidates. A second round is held August 30.

Former resident commissioner of the Gilbert and Ellice Islands (1949-51) Sir John Peel (also resident in Brunei, 1946-48) dies.

Anote Tong from the opposition party Boutokaan Te Koaua is elected president with 47.4% of the vote, followed by his brother Harry Tong (Maneaban Te Mauri) with 43.5% and Banuera Berina (Maurin Kiribati Pati) with 9.1%. Anote Tong is sworn in as president on July 10. The new government includes Amberoti Nikora as internal affairs minister and Nabuti Mwemwenikarawa as finance minister.
