Lyonchen Jigmi Thinley is appointed and installed as prime minister. On the same day his cabinet is announced including Lyonpo Ugyen Tshering as foreign minister, Lyonpo Wangdi Norbu as finance minister, and Lyonpo Minjur Dorji as home affairs minister.

In parliamentary elections, the Bhutan Peace and Prosperity Party wins 67% of the vote (45 of 47 seats) and the People's Democratic Party 33% (2). Turnout is 79.4%.

Elections are held to five more seats of the 25-member National Council (upper house); the remaining five members are to be nominated by the king.

In elections to 15 of the 25 seats in the National Council (upper house), only nonpartisans are elected.

Prime Minister Lyonpo Khandu Wangchuk resigns. Lyonpo Kinzang Dorji takes over on July 31. Among the ministers leaving office are also Finance Minister Lyonpo Wangdi Norbu and Home Affairs Minister Lyonpo Jigmi Thinley.
